GOOD MORNING FRIENDS! I wanted to share a card I made recently featuring the cling stamp Together by Penny Black. Usually these stamps are colored using dye inks, watercolors or water based markers. But I like to color and stamp them using my Copic markers.

The short explanation of the technique is that I place the stamp in my Misti and color directly on the stamp with my Copic markers. I lightly misted the cardstock with Colorless Blender and then stamp the image. The Colorless Blender reactivates the ink on the stamp and leaves and impression on the paper. I explained the how-tos of this technique in a previous post so I'm going to link to it to save time.

I've found that the key to getting a clear image is using Spectrum Noir cardstock instead of X-Press It for the paper. Other paper may work, but I had Spectrum Noir in my stash. And while I used Colorless Blender to reactivate the ink, isopropyl alcohol may work as well, but I didn't test it. All Copic refills, including Colorless Blender, are hard to find right now so you may need to try isopropyl. Spritz the blender lightly on the paper - I found that the small Ranger Mini Misters were perfect for this technique. Just be sure that you are working in an area with good ventilation.

The design of the card was influenced by a card made for Penny Black by designer Jill Foster. Of course, I can't find the card now to link to it, but the idea of the blue inked background and the creating the frame from the Simple Stackers die came from her. For my background, I lightly blended from corner to corner using Distress Ink in Salty Ocean.

The sentiment was stamped with Versafine Clare and heat set with clear embossing powder.

Hope you found some inspiration. Thanks for stopping by and I’ll see you again soon!

GOOD MORNING FRIENDS! Hope you are doing well in whatever level of quarantine you find yourself in today. We’ve been keeping ourselves busy otherwise with projects around the house and garden. We sent rugs out to be cleaned, installed shelving in the basement, and redesigned the raised flower beds in the back yard. I’ve been cooking more, although I really miss the social aspect of eating out. Some days are busy and focused and other days nothing gets done. I supposed that’s just the rhythm of the days in these crazy times.

In the meantime, I’m looking for things that spark joy and keep me going through our new normal. For some reason right now, that seems to be sunflowers so I once again pulled out my trusty In Praise of Sunflowers stamp set by Power Poppy and got to work.

To start, I stamped the sunflower and sentiment on white card stock using Versafine Clare in Nocturne, covered it with clear embossing powder and heat set the image. For the background, I blended Distress Ink in Barn Door, Spiced Marmalade, Fossilized Amber, and Scattered Straw, working from left to right and letting it fade to white. That alone was a pretty background but I felt like it needed something more. So I overlaid the image with the Flourish stencil and blended Barn Door over Spiced Marmalade, Spiced Marmalade over the Fossilized Amber, and Fossilized Amber over the remaining white. I trimmed the panel down to 3.75 in. x 5.5 in. and added a piece of craft foam to the back to provide dimension when I put the card together.

For the card edges, I used the Square Weave Pattern Stencil and ink blended the pattern along the top and bottom edge using Versafine Clare. I covered it with clear embossing powder and heat set it.

GOOD MORNING FRIENDS! I actually had to look at the clock to be sure that it’s still morning. After so many weeks sheltering in place, not only do the days blur together, but the hours as well. It’s gray and rainy outside so I decided that a little spring cuteness was just the cure for a dreary day.

I have a soft spot for the critter images from Penny Black stamps and this one is one of my favorites. I’ve only been able to find it as a wood mounted stamp but I was able to easily remove the block so that I could use it in my Misti platform.

The image is colored with Copic markers (see list below). For the pots, I underpainted the shadowed areas with a series of cool gray tones before applying the YR colors to give the pots more depth. For the bunnies, I blended from light to dark so that I could control the overall darkness and applied touches of R20 on the cheeks, ears, and paws to brighten the overall look. I used V20 to add shadows on the bunnies and around the pots.

For the grass, I flicked varying shades of YG markers and made of point of flicking over the base the pots even though it wasn’t on the image since grass would grow all around the pots, not just between or behind them. For the sky, I flicked varying shades of B and BG, darker around the pots and lighter as I worked my way up. I used colorless blender around the edges to fade the color into white.

For the die cut sentiment, I blended Distress Ink in Twisted Citron and Mowed Lawn on a scrap of white card stock and then ran it through my Big Shot using the Bloom die from Honey Bee Stamps. I cut two more and then stacked the layers together using my Xyron for added dimension. On the top, I applied two layers of Nuvo Crystal Glaze for shine and dimension. The additional sentiment is from the Bloom stamp set also by Honey Bee which I stamped with Versafine Clare ink.

Hope you found some inspiration. Thanks for stopping by and I’ll see you again soon!
By Nancy Sheads for the Queen's Ink

GOOD MORNING FRIENDS! I’m back today with another project using the In Praise of Sunflowers stamp set by Power Poppy. I’m still on hiatus from my Copic markers and have continue playing with Distress Ink watercoloring.

Like my last card, I started by stamping the image on watercolor paper using Verafine and immediately covered it with clear embossing powder. However, this time I did the coloring with an actual watercolor brush instead of a waterbrush. I have a handful of lovely Black Velvet brushes by Silver. These brushes are a blend of natural squirrel hair and black synthetic filament. They hold and carry the water and pigment beautifully and are much easier to work with than the nylon tipped waterbrushes. They are pricey, but well worth the investment if you enjoy watercoloring.

This time I also used a mixture of Distress Ink pads and reinkers. I smushed the ink pads on my craft mat and picked up the color with a wet brush. But where possible, I substituted the Distress Ink Reinkers in place of the ink pads. I placed a single drop of ink on my craft mat and watered it down as desired. Since the ink is concentrated, I could get a better range of shades than with the ink pads. I prefer using the reinkers, but I don’t have all the colors so I had to make do with the ink pads as needed.

In a couple of places, I accidentally colored outside the line. When that happened, I applied water with a clean brush and then blotted the area with a paper towel. The water reactivated the ink and could be easily removed.
I created the background stripe pattern using Versafine ink and a stencil from Wendi Vecchi. Again, I immediately covered the ink with clear embossing powder and heat set it. I matched it with a yellow gingham design paper from My Favorite Things.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">At times like this I turn to two favorite things: Magic Stamp blocks and candy! Turns out that the two work well together. The empty divider tray from a box of treats be crushed flat (stomping on a tray with your foot is very therapeutic - you can pretend you’re kicking the coronavirus right in the teeth!), and then pressed against heated Magic Stamp blocks to create wonderful patterns, like those shown here.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">One round block was pressed at the crossed lines of four sections, one was pressed over a single section, and the rectangle was pressed along six of the sections where a long line slightly curves.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">After stamping, look for flowers, animals or other hidden treasures. Outline, add color with markers and pencils. As shown below, I’m turning the circles into large flowers and have found, but haven’t yet colored, smaller flowering plants in the area below the large blossoms. It’s my ode to spring! I have to do something about the brown grass - I think green paint is in my future.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">YOUR TURN
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">When Clearsnap closed late in 2019, Patti wisely snapped up several cases of Magic Stamp blocks so they are still available to you! The circles have disappeared from the planet, but you can easily cut the blocks with scissors or a craft knife to make your own non-rectangular shapes!

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Stamp on adhesive-backed paper and then fussy-cut shapes.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Stamp on envelopes.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Work directly into an art journal or traveler’s notebook.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Use acrylic paint and stamp on fabric.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">*****Important: Wash the block immediately if using paint or permanent inks. Paint will harden the block, some solvent-based inks can degrade the foam. <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Here’s a fun scavenger hunt that can be done in the house or garage: Find letters and numbers among the odds and ends that surround you! The letter X is a paint tool, the Q is an eraser, the Y is a zipper, the number 7 is part of a torn shopping bag, the plastic T protected the prongs on the plug for our new food processor!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">This will be more fun when we’re no longer quarantined. I found the rusty nail J, metal washers O and zero,, wood scrap A, and plastic B while taking walks around the neighborhood before the coronavirus pandemic. Alas, I wouldn‘t risk picking up such things right now.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">YOUR TURN

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">If your home is neat as a pin, create the letters and numbers from scratch by hand-or die cutting simple shapes to combine or trim with scissors as needed. (Two circles for the number 8, a slim feather for the number 1 or letter I, the right half of the number 8 plus a straight strip for the letter B, and so on.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Find letters and numbers in magazines.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Look through your paper scraps - leftovers from die cutting will often yield interesting letter forms and numbers!

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Draw animals or people posing as letters and numbers.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Take a photo of each separate letter and number so you can make color or black and white photo prints to spell out words, names, and dates. Frame your creation!

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Add photo prints or collage to your art journal.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">*The actual ‘found’ letters and numbers are too thick for a journal, but could be framed in a shadow box!

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Trace the photo prints, re-size the tracings so the alphabet and numbers are close in scale, unless you like a mix of varying sizes. Cut your own stencils from the tracings! (The U and Y are so much bigger than the other letters - that’s why I’m suggesting re-sizing.)

Watercoloring with Distress Inks. By Nancy Sheads for The Queen's Ink

GOOD AFTERNOON EVERYONE! It seems like forever since I’ve seen those of you who are local. Like many of you, we are sheltering in place and hoping that better days will be here soon.

Sheltering in place is a lot like retirement, except that I have more toilet paper. And like retirement, I thought my house would be a lot cleaner now that I don’t get diverted by running errands or visiting friends. And I have even more time to craft….

However, the past few days it seems like nothing I’ve colored has turned out the way I wanted. I’ve torn up a lot of failed colored images. Some days are like that although I’ll admit that I’ve had several in a row now. So I decided to ditch my Copics for a few days (GASP!) and play with some other mediums.

As some of you know, I’m a frustrated watercolorist, but this seems like the wrong time to give that another shot. But I do understand Distress Inks — how they react with water and how the colors blend. So I pulled out the In Praise of Sunflowers stamp set by Power Poppy and decided to see what happens.

I stamped the image on Distress Ink Watercolor Paper using Versafine Clare ink. I immediately covered the ink with clear embossing powder and heat set the image. From there, I pulled out a water brush and a variety of Distress Inks and got to work. Since the image was embossed, I had little trouble staying within the lines so I could apply the color rather loosely. I smushed some ink onto my glass mat (a silicone mat works just as well) and picked up the color with the water brush. I had to play with the colors a bit because using the water brush diluted the ink. By using a combination of layers of color and varying the ratio of ink to water, I was able to get a variety of shades.

I also tried not to overthink the coloring. This was just meant to be a no pressure, easy going, and fun craft project.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Still quarantined, still puttering. How about you?
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">This is Week Two of my Pocket Plus A Card A Day! For the first six days I decided to stick with something comforting - a gold paint pen for backgrounds plus doodling with black and white pens on dark cardstock. For the final day I ended up with two cards rather than one, adding pops of color to reflect the fact that spring is bringing a bright palette back to my yard!

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The pocket is super simple - a piece of cardstock embossed with a 3D folder set at an angle on the front.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">YOUR TURN

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Create a pocket.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Stamp, draw, collage, stencil a flat card per day for a week; sign and date each one.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Stamp or hand-letter the dates that reflect the contents onto the pocket.

By Judi Kauffman for The Queen’s Ink

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">My attention span is short, but the days are long. Like many, I have been making masks and have spent time cleaning and sorting. I turned to my linen closet for soft old napkins to turn into masks. While I was at it, I refolded all of the towels and pillowcases and table linens, and discovered a seldom-used table runner that I brought back from Guatemala some time in the 1980s when I worked with a non-profit group that helped women weavers.

The table runner was always too short. It wasn’t enough fabric to turn into a top or skirt, but it was just right for a tote bag! I added two belts - one to decorate the pleated top of the tote and one for the strap. DONE.

No cutting, no hemming - the table runner was already finished on all sides so all I did was sew side seams and corners to create a flat bottom. I hand-sewed the belt trim and strap because I didn’t want the stitching to show and because I had lots and lots of time to spend on the project. Plus, slowing down like that made me feel closer to the weavers whose skilled hands had worked for many hours to make the fabric and the beautiful bands.

YOUR TURN
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">What do you have around the house that could be made into a tote bag or something else?

I chose fabric that was ready to go, but a different fabric could be stenciled, stamped or embroidered to cover stains or torn spots before getting its facelift!

*Cocktail napkins would make nice little drawstring bags for jewelry or cosmetics.
*Large bandanas would make great lightweight beach bags.
*Add a drawstring to a pillowcase to make a laundry bag.
*Add straps to a pillowcase instead of a drawstring and you’ve got a knitting bag.

If you’re new to sewing, an online search for free patterns is in order.

Stay safe. Be well.Lollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06321620464743893636noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-428093261271178713.post-45525324561506722732020-04-09T06:00:00.000-04:002020-04-09T06:00:24.321-04:00Creative Puttering While Quarantined: Flower Cards, ATCs, and Bookmarks By Judi Kauffman for The Queen’s Ink<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">One of the things that has been making me happy during this uncertain time is taking online classes and experimenting with a mix of techniques and projects. <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The projects you see above and below are a hybrid that incorporates RubberMoon stamps by Elizabeth St. Hilaire, available at The Queen’s Ink, with markers, colored pencils, acrylic paint, Gelly Roll White and Pigma Micron Black pens. And assorted embellishments that I had on hand: Mesh, buttons, staples, stickers, twine.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Keep scrolling past the project photos and you’ll find photos showing the components I made from start to finish. I started with sheets of ready-to-print business cards (part of my stash of unused office supplies!) so when the pages were ready for cardmaking all I had to do was bend along the cut lines and the pieces separated as if I’d spent time measuring and cutting. Easy, easy, easy.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Refer to Carla Sonheim’s class for the how-to. Here are my pages of business cards from start to finish:
No outlines, just spots and splotches of color to create a garden, a forest, a still life, or whatever you feel like doing. Look to nature for inspiration or use your imagination. Either way, your painting will be unique and special!
Two of the three close-up photos above show the inside of the notebook - bright and shiny because the paper is coated and reflects light.

YOUR TURN

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Instead of a bag or notebook, paint on a T-shirt, aprons, or jeans!

Work on a canvas board or stretched canvas instead of a functional object.

Paint in your art journal or onto sheets of heavy paper in a color other than white (textured or smooth finish). Sheets of brown wrapping paper are a good starting point.

Cut or tear up the painted papers for collage!

Stencil on top of the painted pieces.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Next, paint papers to fill the notebook, OR add lined paper and make lists of things to do when the quarantining ends.

My list starts with these items:
1. Eat out in restaurants 3 times a day for a week!
2. Drop off a pan of brownies at the fire department.
3. Head to the die cutting machine with the 3 children from up the street and make cards.Lollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06321620464743893636noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-428093261271178713.post-69716157330267927772020-04-02T06:00:00.000-04:002020-04-02T06:00:05.894-04:00Things to Do While Quarantined: Gratitude Bowls By Judi Kauffman for The Queen’s Ink

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">***CAUTION*** This project is a choke hazard! Keep it away from children and pets!!!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">My friend Toni’s pastor suggested a way to feel grateful and remain focused on the good things in the world during these uncertain times. It immediately struck me as something I wanted to do:

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Choose a small bowl.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Find 10 small stones.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Put the stones around the bowl.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">During the day, put a stone in the bowl each time you feel grateful for something that is happening in your life.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Repeat each day.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">A suggestion I’d like to add:
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"> Write down the reasons that the stones have been placed in the bowl.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Start a small gratitude journal, write on index cards, make digital notes on your phone - whatever seems appropriate and not burdensome.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">OTHER OPTIONS:
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"> Choose ANY small bowl that is meaningful in some way. Shown above, a stone bowl from my friend Kathy. Shown below, an ornate leaf-shaped bowl from Leela, blown glass bowl inherited from my late friend Gail, an Asian sauce bowl - a thrift shop find, and a hand-painted bowl from Italy that we use for olive oil.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"> Instead of 10 stones, choose colorful beads (butterflies!), glass marbles (flat or round, clear or iridescent) or gather ten small random objects from around the house that please you (a pin from Jhone, a pendant from Susan, a leaf I saw take shape in the hands of a blacksmith, a piece of clay that never made it to a project, an old buckle from when I had a waist...

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">To everyone quarantined at home: Stay safe, stay well, and stay creative! Time spent lost in a project is time spent without worries or fears.

I had the nicest compliment from a psychologist friend this morning: She’s seeing her clients remotely via phone and said she’s suggesting some of my ideas to her clients who are also quarantined, especially the one about taking photos of meaningful objects and then writing about them or sharing them. She’s even considering taking daily photos of her own to send to her friends and family during her time at home. It is making her see the objects around her in a new way. And seeing in a new way is always important, just seems like it’s more so now than ever.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been doing a lot more reading than usual the last couple of weeks. (I’m making a dent in the tall stack of books purchased last fall when the used book store had a half-off sale!)

To keep track of what I’m reading I die cut a library pocket and some cards for writing the title, author, and a mini review of a couple of words. (Die set: AccuCut) Of course, I had to decorate the pocket and cards! (Stamps: RubberMoon, Die set: AccuCut)

ANY envelope, pocket, index cards or notebook will serve well! If you have a printer, take a photo of the book cover and glue it onto the review card. Share what you’re doing, post your Library Pocket project on Instagram or other social media.*

Another option:
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Instead of keeping track of what you’re reading, keep track of what you’re doing and feeling by writing on a 4x6 card; tuck the cards into a Journaling Pocket. Alternatively, make a collage, gel print, doodle, sketch, or other small art each day.

One pocket will hold an entire week’s worth of cards if the embellishments aren’t too chunky. Let’s hope the quarantine doesn’t require too many pockets!* (Die: AccuCut)

*If you share via social media, please help draw traffic to The Queen’s Ink by giving the link to this post and mention that you found the idea for your Library Pocket or Journaling Pocket on the store’s blog! (Thank you for doing whatever you can for the store during this challenging time. We all want it to hang in now and then reopen and continue to thrive.)Lollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06321620464743893636noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-428093261271178713.post-84107172849258777742020-03-27T06:00:00.000-04:002020-03-27T06:00:02.189-04:00Stay Well by Judi Kauffman for The Queen’s Ink

During stressful times it’s a good idea to turn to comforting and familiar techniques. For me, that involves doodling on dark cardstock using Sakura’s Pigma Micron Black, Gelly Roll White, and Pen-touch Gold pens to make postcards!

I thought I’d incorporate words on some of them, hence “Stay Well” came to mind. The more stressed I am the more detailed the doodles. Needless to say, I was feeling much better when I drew the center postcard, but was absolutely miserable when I worked through the one at the left. No lettering on the leafy mostly-white postcard to the right - I like the way it turned out.

Coloring the background with gold is my way of “Klimtify-ing” the cards.

What’s YOUR go-to comfort project? Don’t delay! Sanitizing the doorknobs can wait a little while and so can reorganizing the linen closet.

Actually, drawing on postcards and baking chocolate chip graham cracker brownies are tied for first place as mine. Fortunately, one of them has zero calories.Lollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06321620464743893636noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-428093261271178713.post-74851365893256022222020-03-24T06:00:00.000-04:002020-03-24T06:00:02.843-04:00More Things To Do While Quarantined by Judi Kauffman for The Queen’s Ink

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">1. Take a photo of an object that holds meaning.*
Print it in color or black and white.
Glue it into your art journal or traveler’s notebook.
Add journaling:
How did you get the object?
Why does it hold meaning for you?

2. Cut a photo or illustration out of a magazine or damaged book.
Glue it into your art journal or TN.
Add journaling.

3. Make a drawing or collage that expresses how you’re feeling right now.
Work directly in your journal or TN, or on a nice big sheet of sturdy paper.
Add journaling.

Oh, you don’t have an art journal or traveler’s notebook yet? What are you waiting for! This is the perfect time to start one! (Like other businesses, The Queen’s Ink has had to close its doors for who knows how long, but Patti will ship you whatever you need or you can pick up your purchases at the door to the store or out in front if you prefer not to leave your car. Also: Please support the store by purchasing gift certificates now to use later.)

*The pencil box was my late father’s from his days at the University of Cincinnati (1930s into early 1940s). I keep it propped against the wall on a shelf in my studio. Interesting to notice that the three colors most worn down are three of my favorites: Raspberry, yellow/orange and dark teal green. The tape covering the bottom of the box is translucent enough for me to read the lettering and see that they’re watercolor pencils. I think while I’m quarantined would be a good time to test them out. It’ll bring my dad into my studio in a new way.Lollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06321620464743893636noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-428093261271178713.post-21265613773148939542020-03-21T17:56:00.003-04:002020-03-21T17:56:57.012-04:00Quarantine Strategies: Start a New Traveler’s Notebook Insert! By Judi Kauffman for The Queen’s Ink

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">The quarantine continues. I thought it would cheer me up to start a new Kraft brown Traveler’s Notebook insert, even though the previous one isn’t quite done - a fresh start during a confusing time that’s filled with unknowns. After all, there is no rule that a person has to finish one insert before starting the next, right?

The cover, shown in its entirety above and in close-ups below, is either finished or partway done. I’ll let it simmer for a while before deciding. The vertical band is photo paper stamped with inks straight from the pads. It’s a super easy way to get an abstract effect. The torn collage bits are mulberry paper adhered with a glue stick. I picked white acrylic paint to tie things together. But I’m thinking that something nature-themed would be a good addition. (Please leave a comment if you have ideas to share.)
I made a pocket from part of an envelope for the inside of the front cover. The facing page incorporates stamps from RubberMoon (‘Start a new chapter’ and ‘I think I’ll be an artist...’ are currently available), along with stamps from my collection (vintage Picture Show and The Stampsmith).
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I’m starting to prep some of the other pages with torn paper and paint, ready for found poetry, drawings, stamping, writing, doodling, and whatever else comes to mind.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">YOUR TURN
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">How do you use art during stressful times?

One of my neighbors says she likes having a place to let out her dark thoughts and her fears so she’s turned to journaling. An online friend is taking several classes to use her time at home for learning new things.

I tend to turn to die cutting and stamping most often these days, though I’ve found that I’m drawn more and more to painting and embroidery. And my Traveler’s Notebook is never far from my side. Welcoming a new insert booklet feels just right for right now.

I hope your creative pursuits will be a safe and happy place during these trying days.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The stash of supplies I have in my studio is coming in mighty handy during these challenging days of being self-quarantined and I’ve enjoyed doing a bit of online shopping, too, since I can’t budge from home.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">How about you? Are you doing art projects with your family or on your own? Have you found peace of mind and an escape from worry while you’re working in an art journal, stamping cards or stenciling that crate you primed five years ago and never finished?
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I’ve compiled a list of ideas to help you survive the coming weeks:
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">1. Stamp simple cards using only one ink.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">2. Die cut assorted shapes for future projects, put them into folders, envelopes or baggies.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">3. Decorate those assorted folders and envelopes!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">4. Turn the envelopes into coil- or ring-bound books! Organize recipes or memorabilia into the envelopes.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">5. Cut words and short phrases from magazines or old books. Arrange them to create “found poetry” and glue into a journal or onto some of the folders and envelopes or onto some of the die cuts.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">6. Get out your gel plate and create some fabulous papers or prepare backgrounds in an art journal. Limit yourself to paint and stencils or mix in stamps and collage.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">7. Take an online class (check out my friend Carla Sonheim’s web site where you’ll find free classes, among them are 5 years of Kids’ Art classes!).
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">8. Browse through old books and magazines. Flag some projects to revisit.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">9. Organize and inventory your supplies. Box up items to sell or donate. Make swatches for inks and ink pads.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">10. Phone a friend and talk about your projects. This is the time for human voices, not just texts and email.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">11. Bake something tasty! (Repeat as necessary.)
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">12. Give yourself a daily challenge. Keep at it, give yourself permission and time to do this! But don’t stress if life intrudes and you get behind. <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Invent the challenge or find one online via Instagram or Facebook - there are MANY.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Other options:

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">ICAD (Index Card A Day)

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">ATCs

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">A Zentangle tile

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Theme (flowers, animals, faces, quotes, bible verses, trees)

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I began to make a die-cut pocket and hand-cut tag each day even before the coronavirus crisis began and kept it going for 40 days. Time for a new challenge! Not sure yet what it will be.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Stay safe. Stay healthy. Keep creating!
Many years ago I made and sold dozens of appliquéd denim totes with straps made from off-white cotton webbing. I bought it wholesale by the roll.

You know where this is going...I ended up with a lot of extra webbing so I decided that one good way to use a LOT of it would be to sew it side by side to create sturdy, thick fabric. I made two totes this way and I’ve used them for at least 20 years. But after a while they started to look sad and discolored so, you know where this is going...I got out the acrylic paints (bottles for brushing on, dimensional with fine tip for final embellishment).

I tucked the straps inside and turned the tote upside down on a trashcan so I could rotate it and paint all sides and the bottom all at once.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">The first round of paint is a mix of dark blue, medium blue, yellow, teal and black.

The yellow started to look garish, the surface seemed too bumpy to stencil, so I did another round with copper metallic paint, and after that dried I got busy adding graffiti-like marks on one side with dimensional paint in purple and dark blue.
YOUR TURN
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Buy or make a heavy canvas tote. If you start from scratch and like the look of vertical lines, stitch a few pieces of cotton webbing or seam binding to the canvas or machine-stitch vertical lines using satin or zigzag stitch.

Using three or more acrylic paints and a wide brush cover the tote, but not the straps, with vertical strokes. Change the look with metallic paint or another layer of acrylics.

Option: Using dimensional paint (as shown) add texture with graffiti-like scribbles and doodles. Instead of random marks, write a quote, a date or your name, keeping the effect scribbly and complicated!

Allow the tote to get stiff (as shown) by using paint straight out of the jar. Alternatively, use fabric medium mixed with the paint for a softer bag.

Option: Glue or sew on charms, pompoms, or other embellishments.Lollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06321620464743893636noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-428093261271178713.post-66931654736095877622020-02-11T06:00:00.000-05:002020-02-11T06:00:04.110-05:00Mixed Media Tag & Pocket by Judi Kauffman for The Queen’s Ink

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I’ve continued to play with pockets and tags. This time I began with a sheet of black background paper printed with text that I altered with brushed-on paint (purple and gold acrylic) some stenciling done in gold. A good alternative would be pages from a damaged book glued to lightweight cardstock for durability.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The collage elements on the envelope and tag include polka dot Washi tape and dot-embossed cardstock altered with paint. The pocket lining, added for contrast, is black cardstock brushed with strokes of gold paint.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">All edges of the pocket and tag were dredged with copper paint.
As we approach Valentine’s Day, I thought I’d offer a calorie-free tutorial, short and SWEET...

As I’ve asked in the title, “What’s it all about?” The answer: It’s about finding tools and supplies in unexpected places.

Can you tell what the textured paper was before I tore it to reveal the layers? Are you already envisioning things to do with it if it were in YOUR hands? Can you guess what the little plastic piece used to be and what I plan on doing with it?

I’ve already given one big hint - the word “sweet”!

The paper protected a layer of Godiva chocolates in its previous incarnation. I’m going to use it as the starting point for a Magic Stamp block and will incorporate it into some kind of collage. The plastic protected the top of a deodorant stick and I’m going to use it to print fine-line ovals!

Tune in for my next tutorial with projects featuring these items, and MORE...

Meanwhile, hunt around your home and see what mark-making tools you can find and look for interesting papers that you up-cycle!

GOOD MORNING Friends! I’m back today with a new video featuring one of the cards from my recent class at The Queen’s Ink. The Oddball Alice in Wonderland Collection from Stamping Bella is full of fun images and this one is my favorites.

So sit back, get comfortable and let’s roll the video!

In case you missed it in the video, I also included a color map. The color scheme is pretty simple. Since this was a class card, I try to keep the number of markers to a minimum.

For the background, I stenciled the clock in the corner with the Clockwork Layering Stencil by Tim Holtz using Distress Oxides in Fossilized Amber and Candied Apple. Then I inked a corner of one of Wendy Vecchi’s stamps (Screen) with Delicata Inks in Golden Glitz and Rose Gold and randomly stamped the background. I stamped the sentiment multiple times with Ranger Archival Ink and added a few gears as embellishments.

That’s it for today! See you soon!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I treated myself to an AccuCut die called Napkin Fold Cards in December and have been making a bunch of them. Each card includes triangles in two sizes and I always die cut lots of extras so I can mix and match the patterns and color combinations. Therefore: Lots of leftover triangles!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I thought it would be fun to design paper quilt blocks to glue into my Traveler’s Notebook. The photo above shows a 2-page spread with a pair of quilt blocks. The photo below shows three of them, hinged together vertically. They’ll go on another page in the notebook.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">FYI: (For Your Inspiration) The remaining two photos show an array of Napkin Fold Cards. If anyone is interested in a class or in-store demo, I’d be happy to bring my die to The Queen’s Ink for a session. Please call during business hours - leave your name, phone and email info and if there is enough interest we’ll plan a session.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">YOUR TURN:

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Start with gel-printed, hand-painted, hand-stenciled or hand-stamped papers instead of printed sheets!

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Turn triangles and squares into paper quilt blocks.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Adhere to card fronts, pages in an art journal or traveler’s notebook.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Use a fine nib pen to add faux stitching lines.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Use a sewing machine to add actual stitched lines to the blocks prior to glueing them to a project or into a book. (Keep a separate sewing machine needle for use on paper only - don’t use the one you use for fabric, paper will dull it.)

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">SUPPLIES for PAPER QUILT BLOCKS:

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Light or medium weight patterned papers or cardstock

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Square and triangle dies in sizes of choice

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Glue stick

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">FOR NAPKIN FOLD CARDS:

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Coming up with names for my tutorials is always a fun challenge. For this one, I’d like to think the words will have you looking for tab shapes, but if you’re a person of a certain age you’re probably thinking I’m writing about an actor by that name from way back when...
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">This morning I found a sandwich baggie with seven little faces sitting there, minding their own business. I thought they needed a new home: My Traveler’s Notebook! I know HOW I made them, though I don’t know why or when. I think I intended to add bodies and limbs and never got that far. I just know that they make me smile (and isn’t that enough?)...

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Do you have dies for tabs or small shapes like 6-pointed stars? Get ‘em out! Cut some pieces. Make some silly, scary, serious, whimsical or other sorts of faces:

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Mix in pieces of twine.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Add googly eyes or make eyes with hole reinforcements, circles, stamps or whatever strikes your fancy.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Add pompoms, bits of plastic greenery or other embellishments.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Keep going...Add bodies and limbs!

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Whatever you do, don’t tuck your creations away for months or years. Add them to cards to send to kids 5 and above* or grown-up friends who are kids at heart! Put them into a journal where lumpiness isn’t an issue. Glue magnets to the back and decorate the fridge.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">*Safety first: Keep the small pieces away from toddlers and babies to avoid choke hazards. These are decorative only, not meant to be toys!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">(??? Does anyone wonder why the number 26 appears at the lower right on the page with the 7 faces? It’s because I have started to number the pages in some, though not all, of my Traveler’s Notebook inserts. I leave the first two pages blank for a Table of Contents that I add to as I go. In months or years to come I can quickly locate something I need to find... I’ve got several finished inserts lined up on a shelf already and figured I needed some kind of ‘information retrieval system.’)
